To celebrate the return of Milan Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, twenty years from previous appearance, the Culture Department of the Municipality of Milan offers a full calendar of meetings, conferences, entertainment, proiezioni, che si svolgeranno in diversi luoghi della cultura della città, dal 21 gennaio al 13 febbraio.
Il Cinema Gnomo celebra la leggendaria capofila del teatrodanza, Pina Bausch, in due giorni di proiezioni, introdotti da Leonetta Bentivoglio.

L'azione si svolge in un oscuro caffè della memoria, affollato da sedie vuote e percorso solo da sei personaggi, tra cui la stessa Pina Bausch, danzanti al suono delle arie di Henry Purcell. Come lo ha definito l’autrice, questo pezzo è un "lamento d'amore": una metafora, traslata nel respiro dei corpi, dell'impossibilità di un contatto autentico con l'altro. Ma è anche la dichiarazione, concentrata e lancinante, di quella particolare tensione di ricerca che a fine anni Settanta produrrà la rivoluzione scenica del Tanztheater.

Il film raccoglie immagini tratte da quattro pezzi di Pina Bausch, tra cui quella del vero muro di mattoni che apre lo spettacolo Palermo Palermo chiudendo il boccascena, e che all'inizio della rappresentazione crolla fragorosamente. Fu una visione profetica di Pina Bausch, creata solo qualche tempo prima dalla caduta del Muro di Berlino. Oltre a Palermo Palermo (1989), i pezzi inclusi nel film sono Lui la prende per mano e la porta al castello, gli altri seguono (1978), ispirato al Macbeth di Shakespeare e inedito per l'Italia, e ancora Walzer (1982) e Nelken (1983), dove l'ambiente scenografico è un'abbagliante expanse of pink carnations.

Il film trasferisce sullo schermo lo stile e i temi che hanno reso famoso il Tanztheater. Privo di una convenzionale trama narrativa, è un susseguirsi di immagini e azioni percorse da complesse associazioni poetiche, visive e musicali. Le riprese, iniziate nell’ottobre del 1987 e terminate nella primavera del 1989, derivano da una serie di improvvisazioni dei danzatori della compagnia di Wuppertal, stimolate dalla coreografa-regista. Tutta l’ambientazione è a Wuppertal, in places as diverse as the forests around the city, the downtown streets, the elevated train, a dance studio, a greenhouse, a solarium, a rehearsal room in an old disused cinema.

The documentary revolves around shows two diametrically opposite to the relationship between dance and theater: Agua, presented at La Fenice in Venice in 2001, is a work of prevailing language of dance, while the mournful bandoneon, 1980, incorporated in the redevelopment Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, the node is related to the dance drama. The documentary includes excerpts from the shows, interviews with some of the dancers Bausch historical, critical comments, excerpts from the meeting held in Venice from the same public Bausch at the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement given to it by the Biennale in 2007.
